David Ortiz is Back :: Boston, MA

David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox

David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox

Is David Ortiz out of his slump? We’re still a ways away from answering this question, but we’re all pulling for him.

Seen here is a photo of David Oritz of the Boston Red Sox after hitting a home run in 2008. Ortiz hit his first home run of 2009 last night after starting the season with zero home runs in his first 39 games. It was a great feat to witness in person and one that that Red Sox nation homes Ortiz repeats many times moving forward.

Go Papi.

Manny Ramirez, Suspended 50 Games :: Boston, MA

Manny Ramirez

Manny Ramirez

Happy Day.

According to the LA Times, LA Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez will be suspended 50 games for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. The details are still murkey, but according to Ramirez, he attributes the positive test ”to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue.” Likely story Manny. I’m sure as details emerge this will be disputed.

The photo here of Ramirez was taken in 2008 when Manny was still the left fielder for the then-World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. Manny was traded when the Red Sox moved him to the LA Dodgers in a three way transaction that sent Jason Bay and four-minor league prospects to Boston.

Scalp Free Zone, Fenway Park :: Boston, MA

Scalp Free Zone, Fenway Park

How can I buy face value Red Sox tickets you ask?

The Scalp Free Zone at Fenway Park — home of the Boston Red Sox — may be one of the best kept secrets in the city of Boston. This Scalp Free Zone is exactly how it reads, a location to purchase Red Sox tickets at face value from fans, rather than from scalpers. The Scalp Free Zone is located near Gate B, behind the center field bleachers on the corner of Van Ness and Ipswich near the Ted Williams statue.

Anxious Red Sox fans can line up just before, or at game time and see if anyone with tickets, entering the park has extra tickets for sale at face value. If they do, there is a Red Sox employee standing by to broker a face-value deal between the buyer and seller. No scalping, no jacking up the price. Face value or lower, that’s the agreement. A second stipulation is that buyers must enter the park immediatoely upon brokering the deal to prevent resales. There are no guarantees that folks will get tickets here every time, but I’ve had my luck at the Scalp Free Zone and can attest that it’s a good alternative for getting last minute tickets.

Regardless of availability, which is obviously limited, the Scalp Free Zone at Fenway Park offers Boston Red Sox fans a great alternative to high priced brokers, online auction sites and street scalpers. For some other great Red Sox ticket tricks, check out my friends at Red Sox Superfan.

Boston Red Sox, 2009 Opening Day :: Boston, MA

Green Monster, Fenway Park

Green Monster, Fenway Park

Finally, the 2009 Major League Baseball season is underway.

Today, April 6th marks the home and season opener for the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox square off against the 2008 American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays at 2:05pm. The weather calls for rain, so it might be a tough game to complete. Regardless, baseball is back.

This photo was taken during the 2008 season during an afternoon game when the sun was setting and bringing out the dents in the Green Monster. You’d never know it from watching Red Sox games on TV, but up close there are thousands and thousands of dents on the Green Monster. Funny to think each must have its own story to tell.

Go Sox.

Update: The Boston Red Sox home opener was postponed until 4:05pm tomorrow due to rain.

Yawkee Way, 2007 ALCS Game Seven

One more day until the 2009 Boston Red Sox season is underway. The weather looks like rain, but the 2:05pm first pitch should start on time. Finishing the game, however, might be another story.

Seen here is a Red Sox game-day program vendor on Yawkee Way. This was one of the few ALCS Game Seven that I’ve compiled this past week. This shot was nothing special, just trying to capture the moment and the feel of the pre-game excitement. For the life of me I cannot recall what everyone was looking at, but it seems like something caught everyone’s attention here at the same time. Every set of eyeballs in this shot if fixated on something, so I guess it’s up to imagination to figure out what that something is.

Single exposure HDR in Photomatix Pro with some further edits in Adobe Camera Raw, mainly saturation adjustments via individual color channels. Some minor lens vignetting and clarity to finish it off.

Jonathan Papelbon celebrates the 2007 American League Championship Series, Game Seven victory by pouring Bud Light over the ALCS trophey. The Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians 11-2 and went on to win their 2nd World Series Championship in four years. A rather odd display of emotion, but one that I wouldn’t mind seeing again in October, 2009.

Where’s Waldo? I’ll tell you . . . He’s the one waving.

This photo was taken in the center field Bleachers at Fenway Park during a 2008 Boston Red Sox game, I believe an interleague series game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Bleachers are a fun time, for many reasons. Fights, drunks, idiots . . . drunken fighting idiots . . . many reasons.

It’s Friday, and the season starts Monday…only 3 days to go until openings Day 2009.

Another photo from Game Seven of the 2007 American League Championship series between the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park. What a game. This guy in the photo was great. He was lobbing Crackerjacks from 2 sections away, spot on every time. At $4.00 a whack I’m guessing he was well motivated.

Where is Mike Timlin? :: Boston, MA

Mike Timlin and Parlay the Parrot

Mike Timlin and Parlay the Parrot

Why so glum Mike Timlin?

Yesterday we talked quickly about the missing Julio Lugo. Today we have another missing Boston Red Sox player, only this time he’s not missing due to injury. Mike Timlin was not re-signed. He is currently an unsigned free agent. Let me say, I liked Mike Timlin, but the guy could choke in the big games. I hope that overall the Red Sox will have a stronger bullpen in 2009 with the additions of Ramon Martinez and Takashi Saito.

This photo of Timlin was taken during the 2007 American League Championship Series Game Seven. Parlay the Parrot is seen over Mike’s shoulder.

We only have 4 days to go until the Red Sox season opener at Fenway Park on Monday April 6th.
